Mooney's Pub, Brooklyn

Mooney's Pub on Flatbush Avenue in Brooklyn served it's last beers this past Saturday. I remember many, many nights in there throughout the 90's when I lived round the corner on Sterling Place. Open until 4am it was the ideal place to hang out before going upstairs to my apartment. People from all walks of life went in there and there was never any trouble that I saw. This was a time when your bar options in Park Slope were Mooney's, Freddy's on 6th Ave by the Precinct and O'Connors on 5th Ave. No boutique bars in those days, and Bass Ale on tap was as 'foreign' as it got when it came to the beer. Good times.

Waste of Council Tax

Listening to that song must have been as uncomfortable for those cops as those hats probably are.

Ra-Who-ul?

Officially the loneliest hombre in Spain today. Remember all those weeks ago (three to be exact) when people thought Aragones was crazy for not including him on the Euro 2008 squad? Good thing he's got that lifetime contract with Real Madrid going for him.

MLS 2009 Jerseys

The 2009 MLS jerseys are currently being designed and put together. There are a couple of interesting additions to what's gone on before. First of all, the new 2009 MLS jerseys are more American than ever before.

How have they done that you may wonder, especially as most teams have dumped the team wordmark favored by other US sports franchises from the front of the jersey in favor of sponsors logos, Best Buy with Chicago Fire, VW with DC United etc.

Well, it's simple - there is a giant USA flag stitched onto the left sleeve of every jersey, similar to the one Neil Armstrong was rocking on his space suit back in '69. Canadians fear not, Toronto FC will have a giant Maple Leaf flag on their sleeves. How does this balance with the MLS logo on the right sleeve ? Easy, the MLS logo has increased in size x6.

The New York Red Bulls 2009 jersey features varied mesh and polyester materials and has a rubber like 'zip look' on the chest. The Red Bulls away jersey is particularly catching, all navy with gray trim, it doesn't immediately strike you as being a soccer jersey, it looks more like a jersey that would be more appropriate for use in one of Red Bulls extreme sports endeavours. All in all I think that MLS is on a winner with these jerseys, especially if they ditch the current name and number style being used on this years jerseys.

La Jalisciense, Tlalpan

I was taken to this bar by friends about five years ago, and loved the place straight away, there is a very special atmosphere at this bar where everyone makes you feel welcome. Since then the Drink Team has spent many a night in this place, just off the 'zocalo' in Tlalpan in the south of Mexico City, it's quite a bit off the beaten track as far as tourists go, but that's probably why we like it. An historic cantina that has been around for over 130 years. There's decorations on the wall probably from when they first opened. No plasma TV's here, because you don't need them, this place isn't about that. It's about enjoying several drinks and having good conversation. The bartenders care and knowledge of what they serve is second to none. The only drawback is it usually shuts too early, but there are no shortage of other bars within staggering distance. Highly recommended.

The B-Boy Stance

It's not just for boys. They should teach this attitude at school, they don't though - but that's where Dad comes in.
