Freddy Adu has arrived at AS Monaco. Signing on for a season long loan from Benfica in July 2008, Adu has joined the French club AS Monaco, and has an option to join the Ligue 1 club permanently at the end of the loan. The (allegedly) 19 year old is already with his fourth club after spells at DC United, Real Salt Lake and the aforementioned Benfica.
When Adu fever was at it's height four or five years ago and he was being hailed and marketed by MLS as the second coming of Pele, The Onion Bag was the first store in the country to sell customized Dc United jerseys with Adu's name on. We took an educated guess that he would be wearing the number 11, which of course he didn't once the season began, being forced into the number 9 jersey instead, as Alecko Eskandarian held onto the number 11. At the time The Onion Bag was selling more DC United jersey's than our local MLS team, the Metrostars. And that stat was pretty much down to the (alleged) 15 year old wonder kid from Maryland.
His move to Real Salt Lake pretty much ended his 'shirt seller' status at the shop, but he bounce bacl last season when he sported the number 30 shirt for Portugese giants, Benfica.

At AS Monaco he has been handed the number 8 jersey. At The Onion Bag we haven't sold Monaco jerseys at The Onion Bag since Rafael Marquez used to play there. For the 2008/09 season we'll try them again, we have the new Puma shirt, as seen in the picture, being delivered next week. We just have to track down the official 'ADU 8' printing for the jersey.
